For this year's EGU General Assembly I intend to only blog on talks that really catch my eye. This morning there was a fabulous session on Landslide Forecasting with series of great talks. Of these, Samuele Segoni and colleagues presented a very interesting paper on a hugely ambitious project to develop a regional landslide warning system for Tuscany based on rainfall thresholds. The project appears to be extraordinarily successful – it appears to work with very few false alarms or missed forecasts. However, to do this the area had to be split into 25 warning zones, using c.330 rain gauges. As most such systems do, the approach uses an intensity – duration power law relationship. Thus, to make these systems work requires a huge infrastructure. Interestingly, now that it is clear that such a system can work from a technical perspective, the emphasis needs to shift to the societal problems of trying to disseminate warnings effectively, and getting people to react appropriately to them. That is a real challenge.
The second paper that caught my attention was by Peter Lehmann and Dani Or, looking at precursor events in the initiation of landslides using concepts of self-organised criticality. Their starting point was that in the home country, Switzerland, 6% of landscape is prone to instability. In 2005 a rainfall event triggered over 1000 landslides, causing damage estimated at over $3 billion. Essentially they seek to explain landslide initiation by considering processes that provide a cascade effect, as in the sand pile models of criticality. Here they model the landslide as being controlled by fibres and fibre bundles, which are analogues of the loss of strength of the landslide material. They showed that precursor events can be observed as weakening and breakage of the bundles occurs, replicating observed behaviour. It was very neat and very interesting, and provided potentially important insights into failure initiation.
Next up was Nejan Huvaj-Sarihan from Turkey, presenting her doctoral work undertaken at the University of Illinois. This was an experimental investigation of failure time prediction in landslides, using creep-rupture as the basic concept. She built a simple direct shear machine to investigate the creep-rupture process, and showed two key things:
1. She observed creep at even very low shear stresses (<20% peak strength). She used this to infer that all slopes creep, which is correct;
2. She could initiate creep rupture failure when factor of safety was greater than one, but that the time to failure depended upon how close to FoS = 1 the system is.
Using this data she then explored whether failure prediction can be undertaken using the range of techniques available, concluding that it can in all three cases. This is a very neat study, although I am surprised to see creep-rupture in pre-sheared materials.
During questions someone made the point that there is a “geotechnical disease” to ignore the time element. This was a very provocative statement, but is quite correct.
Oded Katz and his colleagues followed this up with a model based study that sought to look material disintegration in controlling the geometry and size of landslides. Again, this was a neat bit of work that came to some key conclusions. For me the most important one was that the power law roll-over in landslides is indicative of the change in material properties, and that the collapsing of the power law relationships onto each other occurs because there is such a narrow range of residual strengths available in natural systems. However, the talk also demonstrated beautifully that failure is associated with breakage of inter-particle bonds. Initiation of movement in the models occurred only when shear surface was fully developed through bond breakage, which links with the previous three presentations.
Those three talks (Lehmann, Huvaj-Sarihan and Katz) together present an extraordinary level of insight into landslide processes that on their own justifies my attendance at the meeting.
In the after coffee session I would like to highlight just one talk, that of Monique Fort and her colleagues on debris flow initiation in the Ghatte Khola watershed of Nepal. This watershed suffers extraordinary pre-monsoon rainfall events – she quoted a storm in 1974 that had over 300 mm of rainfall in an hour – can this really be right? Anyways this small ( 7.8 square kilometre) catchment generates debris flows that result from shallow slides that block the tributary valley, then collapse, creating flows. These in turn enter the main valley, which is then blocked in turn, and another flow occurs down the main channel. There are two interesting things here – first, how a small failure can initiate a bigger flow that in turn blocks the main valley, generating an even larger one – who would try to forecast hazards when this sort of situation occurs? Second, she highlighted the ignorance of road builders in Nepal to these processes, resulting in inappropriate designs that then fail in the next storm. This is a hobby-horse of mine; I could not agree with Monique more.

Typhoon Mirinae (Santi) is likely to pass across Luzon in the next 24 hours
The latest track forecasts for Typhoon Mirinae (Santi) suggest that a direct hit on Luzon is now highly likely:
Mirinae is not especially strong in terms of windspeed, but the eTRaP data suggest that rainfall volumes are high (this is the precipitation forecast for the next 24 hours):
The topography of this area is pretty mountainous, and the typhoon will pass close to Manila:
The ground is likely to still be very wet from the two earlier typhoon events, although in these residual soils the drainage rate is probably quite high, so there is probably a higher likelihood of landslides than would normally occur for a typhoon of this size.

Typhoon Mirinae (Santi)

Once again Luzon in the Philippines is staring down the barrel of a powerful tropical cyclone, Typhoon Mirinae (known locally as Typhoon Santi). The storm is currently forecast to track across the southern part of Luzon on Friday evening:
The 24 hour eTRaP precipitation forecast for the storm suggests that it is, as expected, inducing substantial amounts of precipitation along track:
At the moment the storm is quite fast moving (15 knots) which from a precipitation perspective is probably good news. From a landslide perspective the worry however is that the storm appears likely to induce heavy rainfall in the areas most seriously affected by Typhoons Parma and Ketsana:


Indeed, the similarity between the track of Typhoon Ketsana and the forecast for Typhoon Mirinae is of some concern. Typhoon Ketsana killed at least 460 people.

Typhoon Lupit (Ramil) continues to confound!
The behaviour of Typhoon Lupit (Ramil) is becoming increasingly difficult to forecast, primarily because its movement remains quite slow. The latest JTWC track forecast is still suggesting that the track will pass across the northern part of Luzon:
However, the storm is now moving slowly and is likely to continue to do so, which makes forecasting its track much more difficult. The major concern is that the JTWC forecast above suggests that the storm will track across Luzon very slowly, which is very bad news in terms of landslide and flood generation. However, some forecast models (such as the GFS model) suggest that the slow movement may allow the regional air pattern to change, which could cause the storm to recurve and head to the north, which would spare Luzon. This remains quite unlikely, but would be very fortunate indeed. On the other hand, some other forecasts suggest a more southerly track than the JTWC one.
The storm itself is now quite weak (only a category 2), but may well strengthen a little over the next few hours. This suggests that if the storm does come ashore the major issue will be the rainfall rather than the winds / storm surge. The eTRaP data, which forecasts rainfall for the next 24 hours, indicates the intensity of the rainfall associated with this storm (NB the scale is in inches, 1 inch = 25.4 mm):
The satellite imagery suggests that the outer edge of the storm (i.e. the high level cloud) has just about reached the Luzon coast, although the main part of the storm is still quite some distance away:

Typhoon Lupit (Ramil) update

According to the latest track maps, Typhoon Lupit (known locally as Typhoon Ramil in the Philippines) has been effectively stalled out to the east of Luzon for the last couple of days. It may look as if the storm is now heading away from Luzon, but current forecasts are that it will resume its westward movement in the next day or so:
This is a very large and strong storm (current maximum sustained speeds are 175 km per hour, with gusts up to 210 kph). Unfortunately, it is expected to hit Luzon on Wednesday or Thursday if the storm follows the forecast track. Given the impact of the two previous storms, the consequences are potentially grave, especially if it were to track slightly further to the south than the current forecast. Unsurprisingly, there is deep concern about this storm in the Philippines - take a look for example at this article.

Another threat to the Philippines - Typhoon Lupit
Unfortunately things do not get any easier in the Philippines. Just as the clear-up from Typhoon Parma really gets under way (my tally of the landslide related deaths from this event is currently 346 people), another typhoon has formed. The current track forecasts suggest that there is a reasonable chance that it will pass over the northern part of Luzon once again:
Note that the labels on the track give the date and time - i.e. 21/00Z represents midnight (UT) on 21st, so the storm is some days away. Track forecasts are quite unreliable (that is what the shaded area represents), but the danger here is very real. With the ground being very wet from earlier events, a direct hit from this storm could be very serious. My experience is that late season typhoons (and this is most definitely late in the season) often seem to be quite damaging, although I have no empirical evidence to support that observation.

Typhoon Parma
Super typhoon Parma is now forecast to be heading for the northern part of the Philippines:
Even worse than that, it is currently forecast to move rather slowly as it crosses Luzon, and then to hang around for a while. Note that forecasts this far in advance are quite uncertain, but if the current forecast track is maintained then things will get very nasty in the northern Philippines, given how wet the ground must be after Typhoon Ketsana.

Early May is the start of the landslide season
Whilst the transition towards the Northern Hemisphere summer is rather pleasant for many of us, the start of May also marks the start of the landslide season in the Northern Hemisphere. Of course the main problems kick in when the SW monsoon really gets going in Asia and the tropical cyclone season properly begins in the N. Pacific and N. Atlantic basins, but already there are clear signs that the land is starting to move. Overnight, a number of Pakistani news agencies have reported a large landslide in the Neelam Valley:
"At least 28 people were trampled to death due to landslide in Neelam Valley on Tuesday, Geo news reported. According to sources 28 people have been trapped under the landslide in Jora area here in Neelam Valley, part of Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK). The rescue activities have been kicked off after the tragic incident and the trapped dead bodies of the unfortunates are being dug out, sources added."
Of course the Neelam Valley was pretty badly affected by the 2005 earthquake (the image below shows a part of the valley in 2006), so ongoing landslide problems here are not a surprise.

Meanwhile, the Philippines has already been battered by one typhoon (named Kajira in the Pacific-wide system, or Dante in the Philippines), which triggered a landslide in Sorsogan that killed 23 people. Unfortunately, there is another one (Chan-Hom) en route for northern Philippines at the moment (Tropical Storm Risk):

The good news is that Tropical Storm Risk (see long term forecast here) are forecasting a below average season for typhoons (activity is anticipated to be 20% below the long term mean). The long term forecast for the monsoon in India is essentially average (forecast rainfall = 96% +/-5% of long term mean.
